Bio

Storyteller | Multidisciplinary Artist

Vuyisa Sigonyela is a South African storyteller and multidisciplinary artist whose work explores philosophy, faith, hope and healing, introspection, identity and the human condition. Drawing from personal reflection, lived experience and real-life inspiration, he creates narrative work that invites audiences to listen, reflect and connect.

Rooted in the richness of isiXhosa oral tradition, Vuyisa’s contemporary creative practice brings together storytelling, spoken word, theatre, writing, directing and live musical accompaniment. His performances are shaped by an understanding that storytelling is more than the delivery of words — it is about rhythm, silence, emotion, sound and the ability to hold an audience through the journey of a story.

He is also known by the creative moniker iCiko, meaning “the creative one” in isiXhosa. iCiko is not a stage name, but rather an expression of the wider creative world in which Vuyisa works — as a storyteller, writer, director and multidisciplinary artist interested in the many ways a story can be written, performed and experienced.

His writing and directing credits include uNyana Wolahleko — The Prodigal Son, a 60-minute isiXhosa and English theatre production presented at the National Arts Festival and staged at the Amazwi South African Museum of Literature. The production reimagines the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son through a distinctly South African creative lens, weaving together storytelling, isiXhosa poetry, African harp melodies and spiritual music.

Moving through themes of departure, searching, loss, reflection, forgiveness and return, uNyana Wolahleko demonstrates Vuyisa’s ability to take a familiar story and build an immersive contemporary performance around it. The production moves symbolically from dusk to dawn, exploring the idea of returning home not simply as a physical journey, but as one of restoration, reconciliation and healing — where sound becomes prayer and healing becomes home.

This meeting of oral storytelling and contemporary performance sits at the heart of Vuyisa’s work. His approach honours the isiXhosa storytelling tradition from which he draws while allowing it to live naturally within modern spaces — from theatres and cultural platforms to conferences, corporate stages and curated brand experiences. His work is not confined to a single performance form; instead, he uses the combination of narrative, language, theatre and sound that best serves the story being told.

On stage, Vuyisa brings a performance style characterised by presence, rhythm, considered delivery and commanding stagecraft. His work can be intimate and reflective or expansive and theatrical, depending on the setting and creative brief. He is equally able to present existing work or develop original material around the themes, purpose and audience of an event, allowing storytelling to become an intentional part of the overall experience rather than simply an entertainment interlude.

For corporate and event audiences, this makes Vuyisa particularly suited to moments that require meaning, cultural resonance and a strong narrative voice — whether opening a conference, setting the tone for a gala dinner, interpreting an event theme through storytelling, marking a significant occasion or creating a bespoke performance for a brand or organisation.

His work offers audiences an authentic, homegrown South African voice: one grounded in language, cultural memory and oral tradition, while contemporary in its presentation and universal in the questions it explores.

Vuyisa Sigonyela is available for corporate events, conferences, opening ceremonies, gala dinners, awards ceremonies, cultural programmes, commemorative events and brand experiences, including bespoke performances developed around selected event themes.
